How To Find An English Teaching Job Abroad

Searching for a Teaching Job

While a lot of people believe that getting an English teaching job abroad can be difficult, it is not so difficult as long as you arm yourself with the necessary requirements. The world is becoming a global village and the level of interaction among countries is at its highest level.

English is the most popular international language and a lot of people really want to speak it. The demand for English teachers is increasing by the day. Countries like Poland, China, Japan, Spain, South and North Korea, Brazil, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Colombia, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and many more are looking for English teachers.

Learn a little about the culture of the country you have in mind

The first mistake people make is that they do a general preparation for any country. It is better to select a country where you intend to go and focus all your energy on that country. Study their culture and even learn a little of their language if you can.

Get certified

There are organizations that offer TEFL certification. A lot of countries prefer certified applicants. So, to increase your chances, you should get certified. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the most recognized certifications.

Check Job boards

There are many teaching job boards online. They list thousands of job opportunities all over the world. You only need to filter down your search with the desired position and country of interest. Although most job boards display general vacancies, a lot of them are country-specific. When you come across any of them, you can apply directly. Remember to include your certification on your CV. It will definitely boost your chances.

Contact schools directly

Another good idea is to find out the list of schools in your country of interest and you can contact each school directly one after the other. Depending on your academic level, you can contact secondary schools and tertiary institutions. Let them know that you are interested in teaching the English Language. You may be lucky to be invited for an interview. The worst response you can get is… “we are sorry, we do not have any vacancies at this time”. That should not deter you from forging ahead.

Consult agencies and recruiters

In some countries, teachers are majorly hired through reputable recruitment agencies. These agencies will evaluate you before recommending you for employment. The only advantage with a recruitment agency is that even if there is no demand for the teaching job at the moment, your profile will be kept with them and whenever the opportunity comes up, you will be invited.
