Speaking Lesson Plan

In the example, which follows, we will look at a speaking lesson plan which has been prepared around what students like best and least about friends.

This kind of lesson allows a logical sequence from one activity to the next leading to a pre-determined objective. The teacher should have predicted any possible problems which may arise in class and have thought of possible ways to overcome these. It is this kind of lesson plan which is strongly encouraged on training courses as it is easier to follow and evaluate.

STAGE, AIMS & PROCEDURES

Warmer – to introduce the topic; setting the scene

Brainstorm/elicit from the students, adjectives which describe good/bad friends. Write these on the whiteboard.

Task – To check students’ understanding

Distribute the worksheet and ask students to put the descriptive adjectives/phrase into 2 categories (Best friend/Undesirable friend): Confident; handsome; beautiful; trustworthy; outgoing; timid; punctual; intelligent; rich; fun-loving; creative; interested in the same things; from a different social background; reserved; outgoing; ambitious etc…

Task – pair work

Students are put into pairs and asked to give their partner explanations for why they have chosen to put the various descriptions into one of the other categories. Ask students to pay careful attention to what their partner says and take notes as they will be expected to report back to another partner.

Task – pair work/reported speech

Put students into new pairs and ask them to tell their new partner what their previous partner said.
