Taiwan is well known for its colourful temples, spectacular gorges, mountain scenery, hot springs, festivals, food, and quiet beaches. Taroko Gorge, Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, Lukang and Kenting are some of the more famous tourist attractions outside of Taipei.

Opportunities for teaching English in Taiwan are huge and jobs for degree holding, TEFL qualified native English speakers are available throughout the country. Salaries are quite high, the cost of living is low and working conditions are reasonable. English teaching positions are normally found in the hundreds of Bushibans (private schools) throughout the country. There are more jobs for teaching children than teaching adults. Taiwanese people are warm, friendly and like to get to know people from other cultures. Always ask for a copy of the exact contract before considering a position. Always ask questions regarding contracted hours, times and days of employment, salary, holidays, flights, accommodation, medical insurance, contract completion bonus and visas. Hourly paid teaching jobs give you more free time for extra lessons and are usually better paid than salaried positions. However, you will usually not receive holiday pay. Seek private students if you wish to boost your income. Positions are also available for Associate degree holders from recognized colleges who have also attended a recognized TEFL course. There are many large chain schools in Taiwan and many jobs on offer. It is a teachers market. Always check forums and run web searches for additional information.

Sample Job offer for Teaching English in Taiwan

Seeking experienced and first time TEFL teachers at our highly respected English language schools throughout Taiwan. Classes are delivered at one of our many schools in Taiwan (so no travelling between lessons). Students are between 3-12 years old. Syllabus, lesson plans and materials are provided. Contract hours are 8:30 Am – 4:30 Pm teaching 26 classroom hours per week.

In order to qualify you must be a native English speaker from either Canada, the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, be able to commit to a one-year contract, hold a Bachelor’s degree with certification as proof. Preference will be given to holders in internationally recognized TEFL certification.

You will receive a monthly salary of between 62,000 – 67,000NT depending on qualifications and experience, health insurance, 2 weeks paid holiday + all national holidays, sick pay and medical insurance, subsidized accommodation, contract completion bonus, return airfare, airport pick up, lunch and dinner at school.
