English Teaching Jobs in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a very popular destination for TEFL teachers. Czech people love their beer and consume large amounts. There are many open-air museums and mineral springs.

The hiring season is year-round in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague. Language schools in Prague are now demanding all applicants hold a TEFL certificate. Smaller towns in the Czech Republic have many opportunities for qualified English teachers. These locations outside Prague allow teachers to immerse themselves into Czech culture and language. Wages in small towns are lower than in Prague, but it is pretty much relative to the cost of living. As the Czech Republic is part of the European Union, it is very difficult to find work unless you are an EU citizen or have the right to work in the EU.

Please note that competition for English teaching jobs in Prague is intense and there are many teachers looking for employment at any one time. However, demand does outstrip supply and teaching English in the Czech Republic is still a teachers market. Having been offered a job, do expect your timetable to be quite small initially, schools like to check out teachers before giving them a full-time schedule. Another good way to earn extra income is to find employment teaching English is to advertise for private lessons. Many TEFL teachers earn a good income by providing lessons to individuals and companies. These types of classes usually come with time and networking, so it is always a good idea to get to know people and offer you services privately.

Good methods for attracting private students in addition to those outlined above are to advertise in local newspapers and business publications, post ads on bulletin boards at the British Council, universities, internet cafes and places where Czech nationals are likely to gather. If you have a business, computer or technical background, your chances of finding private students will increase, as will your chances of landing a contract with a private company.
