General Listening Activities in TEFL

Listening Activities & Ideas

  • Dictations – A good idea for listening activities, is to try and get a player with a number of earphone jacks. You can then create your own recordings, for example, letters of the alphabet (for non-literates), survival vocabulary (for low-level students), sentences taken from previously–practised dialogues and sound contrasts (i.e. “Are the following sounds/words the same or different?”)
  • Commercial Recordings – Try and get the recordings that usually accompany the particular textbook that you are using.
  • Short Stories – A great idea is to record short stories. You can then assign a number of different tasks depending on the particular level of your students. These may include a set of comprehension questions or the text of the story with missing words. Students are then required to fill in the missing words as they listen to the recording.
