China is a populous nation whose vast landscape encompasses grassland, desert, mountains, lakes, rivers and coastline. Beijing is the capital and mixes modern architecture with historic sites such as the Forbidden City Palace and Tiananmen Square. Shanghai is a skyscraper-filled financial centre. The Great Wall of China runs east-west across the country’s north.

The opportunities for teaching English in China are huge. Year-round there are far more jobs available than teachers. Positions teaching English in China are available countrywide. Any TEFL qualified teachers should be able to teach English in any part of China they choose with a variety of opportunities throughout the country in both state and private sectors. Salaries (and costs) can vary tremendously between regions. China has developed rapidly over the last 5 years, which means that teachers in China can expect similar standards of living in Asian countries such as Japan and Taiwan. For the first time TEFL teacher, living and working in China’s ever-evolving situation can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Most jobs can be arranged from outside China (in these cases most schools will reimburse airfares) and a University degree is usually required to obtain a work visa.

The cost of living in China is low, travel is inexpensive and food in restaurants cheap. TEFL teachers have the opportunity to teach extra hours in China by arranging their own private lessons. This is a great way to earn extra income and to save very well indeed. Check and double-check all documentation provided by employers and search the web for forums and feedback. Sample Job Offer Teaching English in China

  1. One year contract open to TEFL qualified teachers who will be teaching young learners, teenagers and adults for 20.5 class contact hours per week. Teaching hours above 20.5 per week are paid as overtime. In return, you will receive a basic salary of 8800 RMB ($1,164) plus bonuses for overtime, and an extra basic salary for experience and qualifications. Other benefits include health insurance, flights, travel allowance while teaching, contract completion bonus, accommodation assistance, 22 days paid and 7 days unpaid holiday each year.
  2. Minimum one-year contract open to native English speakers primarily from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Republic of South Africa and secondarily all other native English speaking countries. All candidates must hold a University degree and recognized TEFL certification.

You will be teaching English to teenagers and adults for 72 hours per month (less than 20hrs per week) you will receive a salary of between 6,600 RMB and 9,000 RMB ($880 – $1200) depending on qualifications and experience. Included in the package is reimbursed airfare, health insurance contributions, contract completion bonus, 22 days paid holidays per year and subsidized accommodation (1,250 -1,500 RMB $175 – $200).
